Hello Hartel.net Subscribers! We hope you're enjoying these last weeks of summer and that this August issue is helpful to you. It begins with a look at the recent phishing attacks on Facebook and what to watch for on this popular social networking site. Then you'll find a discussion of bugs (but not the ants or mosquitoes that bother you at barbeques). Our topic is actually Web bugs and we explain what they are and why they're used. You'll also learn how to create folders to store your e-mails more efficiently. Finally, wander through Great Sites for printable coupons to use at the grocery store, inspiration from Julia Child to use in the kitchen, and family travel tips to use on the road. The goal of each of our monthly eNewsletters is to keep our subscribers informed regarding their Internet connection and to improve their Internet experience. We think you'll find this information interesting. If, however, you'd prefer not to receive these bulletins on a monthly basis, click here. To see what's inside this issue, simply scroll down the eNewsletter or click on the links within the index to the left. Thanks for reading! - The Hartel.net Team |

Warning! - Frequent Phishing Attacks On Facebook Facebook is the fastest growing social networking website in the world with a million new users weekly and more than 200 million in all. It's also a popular target for phishing attacks that are popping up with regular frequency. Why Facebook? Because as a social networking site, click-through rates on messages from friends are always going to be high, even if the contents of the message are somewhat out of the ordinary. Spammers know this and are taking advantage of the trusting environment.
For example, Facebook users have been getting messages that appear to come from friends with "hello" in the subject line and links inviting them to check out sites with unusual URLs like "areps.at," "kirgo.at" and "bests.at.'' If you log into one of the sites, scammers take your e-mail address and password, and then send the same URL to all your friends. Take a look at one of the "areps.at" messages here:
Since many Facebook users use the same passwords across a variety of sites, a successful phishing scammer could potentially gain illegal access to their accounts on other sites such as Web-based e-mail. That paves the way for still more attacks, as phishers can then use victims' hijacked e-mail accounts to compromise other websites and spread more messages containing malicious links. To combat these threats, Facebook recommends the following:
Spam on the Rise - E-cards Just More Spam
Spam continues to plague many Hartel customers and the new E-card spam is just another example of hackers trying to get into your computer. If you get any suspicious email regarding an "e-card" (electronic greeting card), our best advice is to just delete it. Most of these have virus attachments or they want you to surf to an infected website. Just say no. Other recent spam emails that customers have received look like they've been sent from the user's own account, or they show another name in the Sender's Box. But if you double-click the sender's name, it shows up as your name. We have a fairly easy solution to eliminate this type of spam from your inbox. If you use Outlook or Outlook Expresss, you can simply create a Message Rule to send those nasty spam emails directly to your Deleted Items folder. Although directions may slightly vary depending on your email software, here's how: 1) Go to your Tools menu, 2) Click either Message Rules or Rules & Alerts, 3) Create Rule. The email software should walk you through how to finish creating the rule. The important step is to have the rule send any email that has your name in the Sender's Box directly to the Deleted Items folder. The only caveat to this is that if you ever actually do send yourself an email, you will need to retrieve it from the Deleted Items folder after you download your email. This is a quick and easy fix to sort most of the junk spam from your Inbox into your Deleted Items folder without lifting a finger. New Office is Now Open - Move is Complete There's been a flurry of activity by Hartelco during the last few weeks and if you haven't noticed, we've made the big move to our new office building at 103 West Centre Street -- right across the street from our old office. The move was made on Friday July 24th, and we're still settling in, sorting through papers and boxes. And of course, organizing things so we can better serve you! Please note that we have a new drive-up deposit box for your payments conveniently located in the alley by the northeast corner of our new building. So in the winter time or even if it's raining, you can just drop your payment off without ever getting out of your car. And of course, it's there for your after-hours payments as well. Just drop your payment inside and we'll see that it gets processed on the following business day. Computer Techs in Hartelco Building - Store is Always Open The Hartelco Computer store (formerly Northeast Nebraska Computer Services) has also made the move to the new Hartelco building. This should increase customer service for those times when our technicans are out on calls serving other customers, as our office will still be open during our regular office hours of 8am-5pm. Glen, Rob, and Tyson are enjoying the new facility which has more space for servicing your computer. So give them a call today for any of your computer issues. Call 402-254-3901. Open House & Ribbon Cutting on Sept 30th - Customer Appreciation Planned Hartelco is planning an Open House and Ribbon-cutting on Wednesday, September 30th, along with a Customer Appreciation Lunch from 11am-3pm. Please plan on attending and tour our new office building and enjoy the day. More details to follow in next month's issue. Back to Top Data Backup Now Available - Less Expensive Than Most Types of Backup Hartelco now offers online data backup. Online backup means that your data is transferred to a secure data vault outside of the Hartington area. That means that your files are safe in the event of a fire, tornado, or other site disaster. Your files are also encrypted so they are safe from hackers as well. Hartel Backup also automatically backs up your data so you never need to worry about it. We download a small program on your computer which runs according to the schedule that you can easily adjust. Plus Hartelco Backup is much less expensive than tape backups which are costly and you still need to take the tapes off-site for the best protection. Ask yourself: Does my current backup system fit my needs? Does my current backup system store data off-site? And then duplicate the data to a second off-site vault? How much data can my system store at one time, and can it store data from multiple computers running all types of operating systems? Can your system restore your data 24/7/365? And is your backup system inexpensive? If not, then you need to ask about Hartelco Backup! Our Hartelco Backup is secure, safe, off-site, and very inexpensive. Charges are based on the amount of storage used off-site, and not on the number of computers backed up. So don't lose your valuable data! Stop by our office at 103 W Centre Street or call us at 402-254-3901 and let us customize a backup plan for you today. Back to School Specials - Order That New PC Now! Back to Top Use Your PC as a DVR - Record, Pause, and Replay "Live" TV - Great for Husker Games This Fall For those who weren't able to view our booth at the Cedar County Fair, we had a display showing how to use a PC as a DVR (Digital Video Recorder). A DVR has the ability to act much like a VCR and can pause, rewind, and replay your TV shows. A DVR records the TV program to your computer's hard drive. So what's the big deal about a DVR? A DVR is able to pause, rewind, and replay "live" TV! And after you're done reviewing the scene, you can "skip forward" to the live broadcast again! Someone at the fair asked "How would I use that?" Our response was that we'd like to use it on every Husker football TV broadcast! Sometimes the network doesn't replay a particular play, and with a DVR you can replay the same football play as many times as you want, and pause it at the critical viewing moment, and then just continue watching. Or you could skip forward to the live broadcast again. A DVR records to your hard drive so there's no tapes to remove or replace. Contact Hartelco for more information and to find out if your PC has the right specs and will be able to be used as a DVR - and be ready for Husker football when it kicks off in September! Call us at 402-254-3901. After Hours Help - Here's What You Need to Know Along with our move to our new office building came a new phone system that will simplify your calls to our office after normal business hours. Whenever you call our office at 402-254-3901 after regular business hours, you will be able to select from different options depending on whether your calling about a service emergency, for help with your Internet service, or if you just want to leave a message for someone. Previously for our Internet Help Desk, you needed to remember to dial 254-3902. However now you only need to remember one number, 402-254-3901, for the Internet Help Desk or for any of your communications needs. Ask The Help Desk - What Are Web Bugs And How Do They Differ From Cookies? Question: Should I be concerned about Web bugs? What are they exactly, and how do they differ from cookies?

Short Tutorial - Creating A New E-mail Folder It's easy for your inbox to get out of control unless you consistently prioritize, process, and file the e-mails you receive. In order to do this, you'll need a filing system of folders for the people, projects, topics, or organizations that are important in your life. Folders give you a place to store e-mails other than your inbox, and enable you to find them quickly when you need them later. Follow the steps below to create folders and manually move e-mails into them:
Creating a New E-mail Folder Using ... - E-mail Program: Outlook Express 6 - Computer Operating System: Windows XP
- E-mail Program: Windows Mail - Computer Operating System: Windows Vista
- E-mail Program: Mozilla Thunderbird - Computer Operating System: Windows XP or Vista
- E-mail Program: Mail.app 3.1 - Computer Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 Note: In Apple's Mail.app, folders are called mailboxes and there are two types—regular and smart. Regular mailboxes allow you to drop e-mails into them manually, and smart mailboxes automatically file e-mails according to rules you specify. The steps below are for regular mailboxes.
