Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
from all of us at Hartelco!

Hello Hartel.net Subscribers!

The spotlight is on connections with family and friends in this December issue. You'll learn how to make the most of your tweets to them on Twitter, and get instructions on uploading videos to YouTube. In Great Sites, we feature resources to help you manage family finances, bake sweets with North Pole recipes, navigate the rules of etiquette, build a family medical record, and reminisce about the Sesame Street gang. Of course, there are foes online as well as family and friends. So we begin with a warning about phony IRS e-mails that attempt to steal personal information from recipients. Stay alert this season, and have a wonderful time with those you care about.

The goal of each of our monthly eNewsletters is to keep our subscribers informed regarding their Internet connection and to improve their Internet experience. We think you'll find this information interesting. If, however, you'd prefer not to receive these bulletins on a monthly basis, click here.

Warning! - Phony IRS E-mail Lands In Many Inboxes

IRS Image According to IRS.gov, a phony e-mail claiming to come from the IRS has recently been circulating in large numbers. The subject line is typically “Notice of Underreported Income,” and the e-mail may contain an attachment or link to a bogus webpage directing taxpayers to their "tax statement." In either case, when the recipient opens the attachment or clicks on the link, they download malware including the hard-to-detect Zeus Trojan.

This malicious code can take over the hard drive, giving someone remote access to the computer, or it could look for passwords and other information and send them to the scammer to gain access to bank accounts. Researchers estimate that the Zeus criminals are emptying more than a million dollars per day out of victims' bank accounts with the software, and it's the most prominent spam-delivered virus in the world right now.

Please remember that the IRS does not send unsolicited e-mails to taxpayers about their tax accounts. If you receive an unsolicited e-mail claiming to come from the IRS, do not open any attachments or click on any links. Those who believe they may already be victims of identity theft should find out what to do by going to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's website, OnGuardOnLine.gov.

Governor Tours Hartelco - Sees Fiber Project and Green Office

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman and Senator Cap Dierks were in Hartington on Friday November 20th and toured a portion of Hartelco's fiber optic project during the afternoon.

The Governor and Senator were shown the main switching office for all phone lines in Hartington. Bill Noecker, Central Office Supervisor, explained the benefits of the fiber optics and how the glass fibers would connect to the existing switch.

Noecker explained that fiber optics were buried to within three miles of all rural customers in 2006, costing $1.8 million and using 52 miles of fiber optics. Noecker noted that this current project would have fiber optics buried directly to each home and business in Hartington and Bow Valley.

Both the Governor and Senator were pleased to see that fiber optics were being deployed not only within small communities like Hartington and Bow Valley, but also made available to rural farms as well. The Governor noted that it was extremely important to keep up-to-date with the latest infrastructure to attract families and businesses back to rural Nebraska.

Governor Heineman went on to say "Hartelco is a very impressive operation. The advances that they are making in technology will benefit rural Nebraska. I applaud their work and progress."

Bill Dendinger, Hartelco General Manager, explained the the latest fiber project was the result of a $5.6 million loan from the Rural Utilities Service, a branch of the USDA. Dendinger reported that over 51 miles of fiber optic cable is utilized in this current project.

Governor Heineman and Senator Dierks also toured the new Hartelco office building which utilizes the latest in "green" technology. Geo-thermal heating and cooling is used throughout the entire building using a "pump-and-dump" system.

Geothermal heating and cooling pumps water from a well located on the property and uses the hot and cold temperature from the water depending on the season. The water is then returned to the ground via another well where it is dissipates back into the earth.

The Governor commended Hartelco on using "green" technology to conserve energy. Tom Noecker, Operations Manager for Hartelco, explained that the geothermal system has an expected payback time of 7-8 years before the expenditure is recovered. Noecker noted that the system for the Hartelco building employs a total of eight heat pumps. Total cost for the geothermal system was well over $200,000 which heats over 14,000 square feet.

Both Governor Heineman and Senator Dierks applauded the investment in the community, and the forward-thinking of the Hartelco Board of Directors in bringing fiber optics to the residents and businesses in Hartelco's service area for future economic development.

Fiber To The Home - A Review...and Preview

What are Fiber Optics?
Fiber optics are long, thin strands of very pure glass about the diameter of a human hair. They are arranged in bundles called fiber optic cables and use light instead of electricity to carry a signal. The light signals represent data, which is capable of traveling at the speed of light.

How Do Fiber Optics Work?
To understand how fiber optic cable works, imagine yourself looking through a very long flexible plastic pipe several miles long, with the inside surface of the pipe coated with a perfect mirror. Several miles away at the other end, a friend turns on a flashlight and shines it into the pipe. Because the interior of the pipe is a perfect mirror, the flashlight's beam will reflect off the sides of the pipe (even though the pipe may curve and twist) and you will see it at the other end. If your friend were to turn the flashlight on and off in a Morse Code fashion, your friend could communicate with you through the pipe. This is the essence of a fiber optic cable.

Stages of Installing Fiber To The Home (FTTH)
Stage 1 is burying the fiber optic cables. North Central Services (NCS) has 99% of the conduit for the fiber optic cabling buried underground - just like copper and coaxial cables. NCS is still in the process of pulling fiber optic cables through the conduit and splicing the cables together.

Stage 2 is placing the fiber to the home or business. NCS will mount boxes called ONT's (Optical Network Terminals) on the outside of each home and business. The ONT converts the pulses of light from the fiber into electrical signals. NCS will also install an indoor battery backup unit and perform some rewiring of your services. (Since optical fiber cannot conduct electricity like the current copper wires, you need a battery at the premises to keep the network connection running when the electricity goes out.)

Stage 3 is activating the fiber optics. Hartelco technicians have already converted two customers to fiber optics. While the initial conversions have been very successful, it will take nearly all of next year (2010) to convert the remainder of Hartelco customers to fiber optics.

Why is FTTH Important to Me?
Fiber technology is unique because it can carry massive amounts of information, called bandwidth, over long distances without loss of quality. Copper wire can also carry high bandwidth, but only for a few hundred yards after which the quality degrades. Connecting homes directly to fiber optics instead of copper and coaxial cables enables homes and businesses to receive a wider range of products and services.

You can be sure the leap into the next-generation broadband will inspire further innovations that we cannot even imagine yet.

Advantages of Fiber To The Home
Greater Capacity:
As today's homeowners are using technologies that require more and more bandwidth, fiber optics are the only medium that can keep up with the bandwidth demand.

Cost-Effective: Data on a fiber optic cable can travel many miles in a split second. This speed allows a more cost-effective method to transmit large amounts of data to everyone's homes.

Secure: Voice and data transmissions via FTTH are more secure than when they are sent over conventional copper cable connections, and especially more secure than wireless cellphone conversations.

Future-Proofing: Once installed, fiber is usually upgraded by changing the electronics that creates the light pulses, and not by replacing the cable itself. That's why fiber networks are said to be "future-proof".

Questions and Answers
How much will installing fiber to my home cost?
We are waiving all construction costs. When we activate the new equipment, you will have higher quality telephone service.

Will installing fiber make my home more valuable?
Absolutely. A house is generally worth much more if it has access to a public street, water, and sewer services, public schools and other "utilities" than if it does not.

Will fiber optics increase my telephone rates?
No. Your telephone service price will not be affected because of fiber optic cable buried to your home or business.

Final Thoughts
We ask for your patience during this upgrading period and believe you will find the benefits of the fiber network will far outweigh any short term inconvenience you may experience. This is an investment in the future that we feel will bring value to our customers and the communities of Hartington and Bow Valley.

Our goal is to keep you in touch, logged on, entertained and communicating without complications. As a locally-owned and operated telecommunications company, Hartelco remains on the cutting edge of technology serving you and your neighbors for over 100 years.

Ask The Help Desk - Must Tweets Only Talk About What I'm Doing?

Twitter Birds Image Question: The typing box at Twitter.com is labeled: "What are you doing?" Am I limited to answering that question in my tweets?

Answer: No, you are certainly not limited to answering the "What are you doing?" question on Twitter. (Especially if that results in tweets that contain just the mundane details of your everyday life, like the fact that you're now eating a bowl of cereal.) You can use those 140 characters for other things, and doing so often makes tweets more interesting and valuable to others. For example, you can pose questions to your followers such as, "What's got your attention and why?" or "What do you think about _______?" You can also send links to neat stuff you've found online, or spread the word about breaking news events.

Short Tutorial - Uploading A Video On YouTube

Want to unleash your creativity and broadcast your talents to a global audience? YouTube makes it pretty simple for anyone to upload a video to the site. They accept video files from most digital cameras, camcorders, web cams, and cell phones in the .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG file formats. Once you've finished editing your video, make sure it's less than 10 minutes and smaller than 100MB.

YouTube recommends using the following settings to upload a video of high quality:

  • MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
  • 320x240 resolution
  • MP3 audio
  • 30 frames per second
Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your videos look better on YouTube.

To upload a video on YouTube:
  1. Create a YouTube account by clicking on the "Create Account" link in the upper right corner of any YouTube page and then log in to your account.

  2. Click "Upload Videos" in the upper right corner of any YouTube page. The "Video File Upload" page will appear.

  3. Click on the "Upload Video" button. The "Select File" dialog box will appear.

  4. Navigate to the file you would like to upload and click on the "Select" button. Your upload will begin.

  5. While your video is uploading, enter as much information about your video as possible, including Title, Description, Tags, and Category. The more information you include, the easier it is for users to find your video. Make your tags as descriptive as you can. For example, if you took a video of your friends at the beach, you might want to tag it like this: party beach surfing. Each tag is separated from the others by a space.

  6. Determine if you want your video set to Public (so anyone can access it) or Private (so only your friends and family can view it). You also have the options to prevent people from posting comments or to filter comments yourself.

  7. Click the "Save Changes" button.

  8. To see your video, click on the "Go to My Videos" link towards the bottom of the page.
Depending on your Internet connection speed and the size of the video, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to upload a video. If you have a high speed connection, you can generally expect the upload to take somewhere between 1-5 minutes for every 1MB.
