Beware - "Love" Notes Are Lure In Valentine's Day Attack

The team behind the notorious Storm worm often takes advantage of holidays to launch attacks, and Valentine's Day is no exception. The worm is now using a Valentine's Day twist to try and infect users with malicious code. Be on the lookout this month for suspicious e-mails with subject lines about love. These "love" notes are actually designed to deliver a "poison kiss" to your computer.

The body of the message directs the recipient to a site featuring a large heart and a notification that says, "Your download should begin shortly. If your download does not start in 10-20 seconds, you can click here to launch the download and then press run. Enjoy!" If you receive one of these e-mails, DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK.

This Valentine's Day worm was originally packaged in a way that fooled most virus scanners. The SANS Internet Storm Center reported that initially only 4 out of 32 virus scanners were able to properly identify the downloaded file as Storm-infected prior to actual execution. Sophos, a world leader in enterprise IT security and control, says this worm is accounting for almost eight percent of overall e-mail traffic.

The Storm Gang changes the content of their attacks frequently, sometimes on a daily basis. To help protect your computer from spam like this, make sure you use and regularly update your computer's anti-virus software. In addition, do not click on website links contained in e-mail messages from unfamiliar or suspicious sources.

Ask The Help Desk - Where Did The Menu Bar Go On Internet Explorer 7?

Question: I recently purchased a new computer and it has the Microsoft Vista Home Premium operating system and includes Internet Explorer 7 as the browser. I noticed that Internet Explorer 7 does not have a menu bar at the top any longer. I used to frequently use the "Edit" button located on the menu bar to cut, copy, paste, etc. Is there a way to get this menu bar back onto the Internet Explorer 7 browser?

Answer: Yes, there is. With a goal of freeing up more space on the browser window, Microsoft Corp. removed the menu bar from its newest browser, Internet Explorer 7. To place the menu bar and its many associated functions back onto the Internet Explorer 7 browser, follow these simple steps:
  1. With Internet Explorer open, click your cursor arrow on the "Tools" button located on your Internet Explorer 7 toolbar.

  2. Scroll down to "Menu Bar" on the resulting drop-down menu and select it. The menu bar will immediately appear on your Internet Explorer 7 browser. This works the same whether you are using Windows XP Home Edition or Windows Vista Home Premium as your operating system.

Winter Weather Awareness - Make Sure You Have a Phone That Will Work When Power is Out

Hartington Telecommunications would like to remind everyone that cordless phones will not work in the event of a power outage caused by severe winter weather. Cell phone service may also be interrupted in the event of a power outage near the cell tower.

But a corded phone connected to a Hartington Telecommunications phone line will work nearly 100% of the time. Our phone system has power right in the phone line, so even if the electricity in your home goes out, you will still have power to your corded phone. If power is unavailable in our digital switching office, we have a large backup generator which automatically takes over. Should that fail, we also have batteries that will run our phone system for over 24 hours.

If you currently have only cordless phones, we strongly urge you to get a corded phone and at the very least, include it in your home emergency kit. It is very important to be able to 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency! Severe weather can strike at anytime -- Please be prepared!

Podcasting Classes - Attract People to Your Business, School, or Organization

This new exciting media called podcasting is a method of distributing audio and video files over the Internet for playback on computers or portable devices. Get real, live, up-to-date information brought to you through this new media and at your convenience via your computer, your car, or your MP3 Player.

Podcasting is not a replacement for radio or other media. It is a new method which allows listeners to subscribe to both free and paid programs, have them delivered to their computers and transferred to the media player of their choice.

Podcasting is experiencing tremendous growth and is being used to promote tourism, travel, recreation, historic sites, schools, businesses, and other activities. Many communities are creating downtown walking tours and driving tours of their historic areas. Instead of just handing out a map or brochure of the area – why not download an audio version and listen to history come to life that is available to the world?

The opportunities are endless as communities and businesses find new methods of marketing. This new media is wide open for fresh creative minds.

University of Nebraska Extension Information Technology Educators are bringing “Podcasting Across Nebraska” to Hartington. Learn how to create and publish a podcast for your community, business, yourself, or your school.

To learn how to create a podcast, a workshop will be held on Saturday, February 16 from 9:00 am to 3:30pm so attendees will learn how to produce and edit an audio podcast and how to add images and video to their podcast.

The workshop will conclude on Saturday, March 1 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Here the participants will have the opportunity to fine tune their podcast with the instructors and learn how to upload it to a website.

Cost of the Podcast Across Nebraska class is $79.00 and registration is due February 14th. Registration forms can be picked up at the Hartington Public Library, the City offices, or on the city’s website at www.ci.hartington.ne.us/news.asp. Please mail forms back to Carla Becker, City of Hartington, 107 West State Street, P.O. Box 427 or drop off at the City Office or email devcoor@hartel.net. Space is limited so register today!

Businesses - Music-on-Hold Can Assist You

If your business doesn't have Music-on-Hold, you could be losing customers. It's a proven fact that callers experiencing "Silence-on-Hold" will hang-up the fastest. But when you have music or information available, callers will hold for approximately 30 seconds longer and call retention is increased by 40%. Silence many times can make a caller impatient. And unless you have obtained the rights to many songs, putting a local radio station on your phone system is likely illegal and could open your business to potential lawsuits.

This doesn't have to be the case if you get Music-on-Hold services from Hartington Telecommunications.

All it takes is a simple plug-and-play box that plugs right into your current phone (key) system. With a flash memory card installed, you can give callers the exact message you want -- whether it's a "special of the month" that your company is promoting, or just a "Thank you for holding" message. The message on the flash card is easy and convenient to change.

Call 254-3901 for more information about Music-on-Hold equipment. It's easy, inexpensive, and it's exactly what you want your customers to hear.

Short Tutorial - Add Useful Buttons To Internet Explorer Command Bar (Toolbar)

Unlike the Internet Explorer 6 browser, Internet Explorer 7 includes few buttons by default on its command bar (toolbar). To add additional buttons to Internet Explorer 7 browser when using either Windows XP Home Edition or Windows Vista Home Premium operating systems, follow these steps:
  1. Launch Internet Explorer.

  2. Click your cursor arrow on the "Tools" button located on your Internet Explorer toolbar.

  3. Scroll down to "Toolbars" and then select "Customize" from the resulting submenu.

  4. A Customize Toolbar dialog box will appear. It will have two listings of buttons. On the left side is the list called "Available toolbar buttons." On the right side is the list called "Current toolbar buttons." Select the buttons from the "Available toolbar buttons" list that you'd like to add to the Internet Explorer 7 command bar.

  5. Click on the "Add" button and then click on "Close." Your selected buttons will now be added to your browser's command bar (toolbar).
