Caution! - Warning About Counterfeit And Pirated Software

Pirate Picture According to a recent report from Microsoft®, the number of customers who unknowingly purchased counterfeit and pirated Microsoft software has risen dramatically over the last two years. This software poses a serious risk to security, since studies around the world have shown that a high percentage of illegally copied or downloaded software contains spyware, malware, or other malicious code. Consumers who are duped by fraudulent software can encounter viruses, lose personal information, risk having their identities stolen, and waste valuable time and money.

Worse yet, today's counterfeiters are often large criminal syndicates that don't stop at distributing hundreds of copies of unlicensed software. Software pirates are likely to create botnets, which are armies of compromised computers controlled by cybercriminals and used to perform a host of illegal Internet activities.

Here are some tips to help you avoid buying counterfeit software:

  1. Take the time to fully research the products that you are buying and from whom you get them. Read reviews and talk to retailers so that you build a knowledgeable perspective.
  2. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Buy from a reputable source such as major retailers or other recognized resellers.
  3. Look for spelling mistakes on the software package or a shoddy appearance.
  4. Make sure software products are licensed. It is standard that every legal piece of software includes a developer's license agreement.
  5. If you're unsure if a product is legitimate, call the manufacturer.
Microsoft has launched an education campaign to help you recognize counterfeit and pirated software, and know if you're purchasing genuine products. For more information, visit their "How to Tell" site at http:microsoft.com:80/howtotell.

Why You Need a Backup - BEFORE Trouble Arises

You might not think you need a backup service since you have an external hard drive. But you do! External hard drives can die without warning. You don't need to worry about that with Online Backup from Hartelco.

We really recommend Online Backup as it has tremendous advantages over an external hard drive. It offers so much more assurance that your data, files, and precious photos and videos are safe.

Your files are encrypted and copies of your files are stored on remote servers outside Nebraska. The servers are professionally maintained in a climate-controlled vault. There's no need to worry about losing data in the secure environment.

Your external hard drive could crash at anytime without warning. Or an external hard drive could be accidentally knocked over and fall causing hard drive errors. There's any number of issues that could appear.

Fire's always a threat, too. If your home or business burns, you'll have many other things that you will need to worry about. The data stored on your computer could be huge. And if your backup was also in your home or business that burned, what good is it?

One of Online Backup's best features is that your data is stored offsite. Any catastrophe that occurs in your home or business won't affect your online backup. You'll be able to get your important files no matter what happens.

If you used to worry about backups, it's time to relax. There's no need to worry anymore.

The peace of mind is really important. Online Backup is a great service. And it's not very expensive for both the home user and business user.

Contact Hartelco at 402-254-3901 for more information on Online Backup. And rest easy.

A Webmail Reminder - Storage Doubles and New Rules in Effect March 1st

Reminder: Hartelco is doubling the size of email storage space for each of our Hartel.net customers. Please read carefully!

Currently 50Mb of storage space is available for emails. This has now been doubled to 100Mg of storage space for each and every Hartel.net customer.

In the past, if the size of your email waiting on our email server (also known as Hartel.net webmail) for you to download to your PC exceeded 50Mb, you would receive an email notice from us asking you to clear your account of unwanted emails. If after 10 days, the file size was not reduced to below 50Mg in size, your inbound email may have been blocked. This will no longer be the case.

On a going-foward basis starting March 1st, if the 100Mb file space is exceeded, a $5/month fee will be automatically assessed for each additional 50Mb of space used above the initial 100Mb allotted to each customer's email. Again, this is only the amount of space used to store email in each customer's webmail account each month, and NOT the amount of email that is downloaded to your computer which is unlimited.

Some email software have settings that keep a copy of all emails on our Hartel.net email server AFTER you've already downloaded them to your computer. This is also a way to protect emails that contain pictures and save documents with attachments in case of troubles with your home or business computer. Some customers use this file space as storage, which is fine as long as the 100Mb file space is not exceeded.

To find out how much space your email account contains on our webmail server, just log into your webmail account by clicking on the View Mail icon in the top, right-hand corner of the Hartel.net homepage. You can use your normal email username and password to login to the webmail, where you will see your file space size in the top, right-hand corner just above the Trash button. Be sure to logout again once you are done viewing your email on our server.

Webmail is also how you can check your Hartel.net email account when traveling or away from home.

Again, please note that these size limits have no bearing whatsoever on the amount of email that you download to your computer. This is only regarding the amount of email that you store on our server.

If you are concerned about spam email filling your allocated 100Mb of email storage space, we suggest using our Postini email filter. Postini is only $1/month and reduces the number of spam emails received by over 90%.

Please contact our office at 402-254-3901 for more information on Postini, or if you have any questions regarding the size of your email/webmail account.

Local Website Of The Month - New Regional Website for Cedar County!

(If you'd like your business' website featured, contact us at htc@hartel.net. This is a free service.)

We Have It All In Cedar County

Why this website is here
We wanted a regional website to reflect our quality of life in the rural communities of Northeast Nebraska. Our land holds great riches with a wide array of opportunities and people can fulfill their dreams here! These dreams are about better lifestyles for ourselves and the ones we love. Believing in our dreams allows us to start our own businesses where people pull together in support of each other. In these difficult times where our nation is struggling economically, we believe that Northeast Nebraska has the economic climate where families can still live in a quality and safe environment where they can have good paying jobs or start a business of their own.

This website is in its initial stages and will be growing in the next 1-2 years. Some of our goals will be to provide a website where people can go to find available jobs, available buildings for businesses, residential housing, post a resume, find out about our existing businesses, schools, and much more! We hope that it will lead you here to Northeast Nebraska not only to visit, but to stay and fall in love with our land and its abundance of opportunities.

Be sure to watch the video on the website about why "we have it all in Cedar County".

The website was funded in part by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development administered by the Nebraska Rural Development Commission. Many long hours were put into the project by many local area residents. We hope you like it.

Just click here to be taken to this regional website..

This Month's FAQ - What Are Hashtags And How Do I Use Them?

Question: As someone who's just getting started on Twitter, I'd like to know more about hashtags. What are they and how do I use them?

Twitter Computer Picture Answer: Hashtags are a community-driven way to label tweets (posts made to Twitter). They begin with the hash mark (#), followed by a word, phrase, or abbreviation—examples of hashtags include #americanidol and #lakers. When you insert a hashtag in your post, it makes it easy for Twitter users who don't already follow you (plus anyone searching Twitter) to find your public contributions to the discussion on that particular topic.

Here are some tips for you:

  • In order to get tracked via a hashtag, you need to opt-in and follow twitter.com/hashtags. Every time you make a post in Twitter that includes a hashtag, it will show up as a real-time post on hashtags.org.

  • If you visit hashtags.org, you can click on any tag and it will show you all of the posts that have been tagged with that keyword.

  • You can search for hashtags on Twitter by using the search box on the Twitter sidebar.

  • You can also subscribe to any updates that contain a tag by visiting hashtags.org, entering in the tag you want to follow, and then clicking "subscribe."
By the way, thanks for the question. We're glad we could hash over this topic with our readers.
