Social Media Warning – Posting Vacation News Can Trigger Burglary

Cybercriminals are increasingly using social media to search out burglary opportunities. These thieves watch for information about upcoming or current vacations and time their crimes for when homes will be empty. When users of Facebook, Twitter, foursquare, and other social media sites post when they will be (or are) out of town, they run the risk of unknowingly making their homes prime targets for burglary.

Thieves get this information in several ways:
    Burgler Pic
  • Facebook: Say your status reads, "Can't wait for Monday, starting week-long trip to the Caribbean." If you haven't adjusted your privacy settings, this information can be seen by all of your Facebook friends. Even if your privacy settings are secure, people who can see it may decide to "share" or pass on the information to others who might be disreputable.

  • Twitter: On Twitter, if you haven't activated the "protect my tweets" setting, anyone (even those not following you) can see the information you post. A tweet like, "Stopping in Omaha on our long drive to Denver" lets everyone know you are not at home.

  • foursquare: This application is meant to let people know where you are. If you live in Boise and you have checked in at a restaurant in San Francisco, that's a huge tip-off to anyone who wants to get into your home without you there. And foursquare is doubly dangerous because you have the option of sharing your activity on Facebook or Twitter.
To protect yourself, post as little as possible about your vacation plans, and ask others not to talk about trips before they happen or while in progress. Remember, you can tell everyone about your vacation when you return. If you're simply too excited to not post your plans on Facebook, be sure your privacy settings are secure. To do this, in the upper right-hand corner of your Facebook home page, click Account and select Privacy Settings. Then click the Customize Settings link, which will take you to a page where you can specify what others see.

Thunderstorms - Don't Let Them Erase Your Data

Thunderstorms have been rumbling through the area over the past several weeks. Don't let a lightning bolt crash your hard drive. If you've ever experienced a hard drive crash, then you know how devastating it can be to lose files whether they are personal, business, or old family photos that simply can't ever be replaced. It can be a nightmare.

Online Backup from Hartelco stores your files safely and securely in data vaults located in several other states. Your files are not only safe from a hard drive crash, but also safe from fires, tornados, and other catastrophes.

As an example, we rescued a hard drive for a business who's computer crashed. They hadn't yet gotten Online Backup from Hartelco, and they spent over $10,000 having the data retrieved on their failed hard drive, and they lost business while their system was down.

Online Backup is very inexpensive, and can be customized to run automatically and backup whichever files you choose - it's up to you. And your files are available to you for retrieval 24/7.

Give us a call at 402-254-3901 to learn more about Online Backup...and sleep soundly.

Fiber Optic Myths - Is That Really True?

While all of the fiber optic cabling for the towns of Hartington and Bow Valley have been buried for quite some time, we're still in the process of connecting the fiber optics to the remaining homes and businesses. Questions and rumors still abound, so we thought this would be a good time to address them.

Q: Is it true that you'll be digging in my yard when you connect the fiber optic cable?
A: No - not at all. In almost all cases, all the digging has been completed.

Q: I've heard that you'll be charging me to connect the fiber optics.
A: No. There is never any additional charge for fiber optics.

Q: Will this new fiber optic cable affect my TV service?
A: Not yet. We are still working to find a way to provide TV over the fiber optic cables and keep our customer's rates low. Stay tuned for details.

Q: Why did Hartelco install fiber optics in the first place?
A: Installing of the fiber optic cable throughout Hartington and Bow Valley is similar to back in the 1970s when all the phone lines were on poles with aerial wires. Over time, those aerial wires wore out and needed to be replaced. In retrospect, it was a very smart decision to upgrade the phone lines and bury them underground rather than to expose them to ice storms and blizzards.

In a similar fashion, those copper phone lines that were buried all those years ago have now begun to deteriorate in certain areas. Rather than replace the copper lines with the same type of cable, the Hartelco Board of Directors decided to borrow the money to upgrade to fiber optics - the best forward-looking type of cable found today. Fiber optics is said to be "future-proof", meaning that the lines should not need to be replaced because of becoming obsolete. We look forward to what the future holds.

Q: Does that box in my house need to be plugged in? Will it use lots of electricity? What's that "beeping" sound?
A: In almost all fiber deployments, a battery backup is needed in case of power outages. A battery backup is installed in each home and business, and the units should be already plugged into an electrical outlet to charge it. It's been said that the types of battery backups that we install only use as much electricity as a standard night light!

Now about that "beeping" sound - that means that the battery backup has lost electrical power and it's letting you know that it's running on battery power. There's nothing to worry about, but if you hear a beeping sound and there's not been any weather-related outages, you may want to check your circuit breaker or make sure the grandchildren or young children haven't accidentally unplugged your battery backup. Unplugging the unit from the electrical outlet would cause the phones in your house to go dead. Stranger things have happened!

Please be sure to keep your battery backup plugged in at all times. If it's not plugged into an electrical outlet now, please plug it in as soon as possible.

Q: When will I see a speed increase in Internet?
A: Fiber optic cables provide the pathway for voice and data transmissions. We are constantly upgrading the speeds of broadband DSL, and we will continue to do so in the future. If you need a faster speed than the 12 Mbps download speed that we have advertised, please contact our office at 402-254-3901.

Q: I'm not seeing the speeds that I expected. Now what?
A: There are many factors in making sure that you're getting the speed you wanted, whether you have Internet over copper cable or over fiber optic cable. Our technicians can test the line from our office to your home or business to detect any issues. There may also be problems with certain websites that are slow. Many times the computer in the customer's home has been found to be the speed issue, whether it was from a virus, full hard drive, not enough memory, loose connection, or other problem. If you suspect a speed issue, call Hartelco and we can talk about your options to speed up your service.

Please let us know if you have questions on fiber optics. Just click here to send an email to us. We'll be glad to address any questions in upcoming issues of the newsletter.

Hartelco TV Service - HD Channels & More

We want to remind our readers that Hartelco TV has HD (high-definition) channels available. Please re-program your TV to receive these channels for ultra-clear viewing. HD channels that we offer are: South Dakota Public TV (three channels), NBC, CWTV, ABC, AccuWeather, ESPN, CBS, Azteca, Nebraska Public TV (three channels), Fox, and MyKPTH.

We also want to remind our viewersthat the Big Ten Network (BTN) is now on Channel 20. This channel will be where Husker games, that were formerly on a Pay-Per-View basis, will be aired at no extra cost to you! Please call us if you're a Hartelco TV customer and you aren't able to view channel 20 after re-programing your TV.

We also thought we'd remind everyone of this story from August 2010:

We were shocked to hear about this story. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued warnings about DISH Networks and DirecTV for their questionable business practices!

The BBB warning (click here to read) urges consumers to carefully read the fine print of their contracts before signing as there could be hundreds of dollars in hidden fees for early termination of service and contract extensions.

There were over 53,000 complaints filed with the BBB against these two satellite companies over the last three years. That's more complaints than all cable TV companies combined!

Hartelco TV always strives to serve our customers the best service with respect and honesty. Our technicians are local people, and we work hard to serve you and to have any issues resolved quickly.

We hope you agree that Hartelco TV is the best entertainment value anywhere.

Digger's Hotline - Don't Take Unnecessary Risks

This is the time of year that we remind everyone of just dialing 811 for Digger's Hotline in Nebraska. But do you remember why it's so important? And do you know why it's now more important than ever?

It's the law that anyone digging should call Digger's Hotline at least 48 hours before they dig so the utility companies can mark their underground wires, pipes, and cables so their service to your property and to your neighbor's property is not disturbed. It's a free call, and the 811 service is available 24 hours a day. Calling 811 could relieve you of liability claims or costs to replace damaged utilities.

Now it's more important than ever to call 811. With Hartelco's Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) project, splicing a damaged fiber optic cable isn't as easy as splicing copper wires. In fact, most times the whole segment of fiber optic cable must be replaced as it simply can't be spliced in the middle of a section where it may have been damaged.

So if someone is found to have started digging without contacting Digger's Hotline and damages a fiber optic cable, the costs that are charged to the person damaging the cable are much, much higher than what it would have been to splice underground copper wires!

Remember, just call 811 at least 48 hours before you dig. It could save both you and your pocketbook a major headache.
