Warning! – Traveler Scams Are All Over The Map If you receive an e-mail from a friend saying he/she is stranded in London as a result of the Icelandic volcano eruption and the resulting cancellation of flights, chances are your friend's e-mail account has been hacked. This "stranded in London" e-mail is just one of many variations on traveler scams being used by phishers.
Here's how the scam typically works: Step 1: The "traveler" receives an official-looking e-mail that appears to be from the administrator of the e-mail account, and is asked to reply to the e-mail with his/her e-mail password or the account will be closed. Step 2: The phisher logs in to the traveler's account, using the real password, and then changes the password so that the traveler can no longer access his/her e-mail. Step 3: The phisher reads e-mails in the traveler's account to identify people who might be friends. Step 4: The traveler's friends get an e-mail from the traveler's normal e-mail address, containing a message like this: "I'm out of the country and (I lost my wallet or flights have been delayed or I've been mugged) and I need you to wire me money immediately in order for me to get home." Step 5: Because the e-mail came from the traveler's real e-mail address, the friends are able to send replies and receive answers to convince them that this is a genuine e-mail. Some proceed to send money, which ends up going to the phisher. In addition to hacking into e-mail accounts, these phishers are also breaking into social networking accounts and posing as the user. They then send e-mails, instant messages, or tweets to friends and family saying they're in trouble while traveling and urgently need money. To protect yourself from becoming a "traveler," be very skeptical of any e-mail that asks for your password or any link that asks you to log in to a social networking site again. FCC's National Broadband Plan - A Disaster for the Rural U.S. What would happen if the federal government decided that city roads, bridges, and infrastructure should be better-constructed and more efficient than the roads in rural America? What about if policymakers determined that urban residents should be able to get where they are going and get what they need faster than rural residents? A new government plan intends to make that true of our nation's information superhighway - the Internet. And while it's not the highway we drive on, rural consumers should still be very concerned. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has crafted a plan to make broadband Internet access universally available. Reliable, high-speed broadband has become the essential service of today, like electricity and telephone service were decades ago. Broadband can improve the lives of all consumers, but access is especially important for those of us living in rural America. The Internet enables farmers to monitor weather patterns and ranchers to buy and sell livestock in markets far from home. It also gives small businesses the opportunity to reach customers nationwide, offers local students the chance to take classes online, and allows doctors to remotely diagnose patients and even offer remote emergency care. The many benefits of broadband are clear, and we applaud the government's efforts to make affordable, reliable Internet connections a reality for all Americans. But the FCC's plan will make rural Americans second class citizens in the new broadband world, because it establishes a speed goal for rural areas that is twenty-five times slower than for urban areas. Please note that the FCC generally considers even the Omaha metro area as "rural". Shouldn't rural communities have access to the same broadband services as our larger towns and cities? Years ago, Congress established a universal service policy for telephone service. It required that those living in rural areas have access to communication services at prices that are affordable and reasonably comparable to those available in urban areas. Rather than support this same universal service philosophy for broadband, the FCC's plan offers faster, better service to some Americans while guaranteeing lesser services to others. Don't let the FCC keep our rural community on the slow side of the broadband digital divide. Contact your congressional representatives and urge them to support regulatory action that ensures equal access to broadband for all Americans. If you'd like to learn more about this issue, contact Hartelco at 402-254-3901, or your local communications provider in your area.
Fiber Optics - What's the Benefits? Why is FTTH Important to Me? You can be sure the leap into the next-generation broadband will inspire further innovations that we cannot even imagine yet. Advantages of Fiber To The Home Cost-Effective: Data on a fiber optic cable can travel many miles in a split second. This speed allows a more cost-effective method to transmit large amounts of data to everyone's homes. Secure: Voice and data transmissions via FTTH are more secure than when they are sent over conventional copper cable connections, and especially more secure than wireless cellphone conversations. Future-Proofing: Once installed, fiber is usually upgraded by changing the electronics that creates the light pulses, and not by replacing the cable itself. That's why fiber networks are said to be "future-proof". Questions and Answers Will installing fiber make my home more valuable? Will fiber optics increase my telephone rates? New Area Code - 10-Digit Dialing Starts in June Eastern Nebraska will soon have a new "Area Code Overlay" assigned to our region of the state. How will this affect your calling? Well the first thing you need to know is that your current phone number with the 402 area code will not change, and neither will anyone else's current phone number. Only newly-assigned phone numbers might be assigned a number with the new 531 area code. It will depend on the amount of new phone numbers needed, but it's estimated that most, but not all, of the new numbers with the 531 area code will be assigned in the Omaha and Lincoln areas. But it is possible that a newly assigned number in our Hartington exchange might be assigned the new 531 area code. Because of this, the new area code will require that everyone dialing a local phone number now must include your area code when dialing! This means that you will now be required to dial 10-digits instead of the normal 7-digits. This is a requirement throughout the current 402 area code region. And what else might you need to know in advance? Do security systems need to be re-programmed for 10-digit dialing for local calls? What about speed dialing? We've got it all covered. Just click here for more information. And of course just give us a call at 402-254-3901 if you have more questions. We'll be glad to help you!
