Warning! – Traveler Scams Are All Over The Map

If you receive an e-mail from a friend saying he/she is stranded in London as a result of the Icelandic volcano eruption and the resulting cancellation of flights, chances are your friend's e-mail account has been hacked. This "stranded in London" e-mail is just one of many variations on traveler scams being used by phishers.

Traveling Scam Download Graphics to View Here's how the scam typically works:

Step 1: The "traveler" receives an official-looking e-mail that appears to be from the administrator of the e-mail account, and is asked to reply to the e-mail with his/her e-mail password or the account will be closed.

Step 2: The phisher logs in to the traveler's account, using the real password, and then changes the password so that the traveler can no longer access his/her e-mail.

Step 3: The phisher reads e-mails in the traveler's account to identify people who might be friends.

Step 4: The traveler's friends get an e-mail from the traveler's normal e-mail address, containing a message like this: "I'm out of the country and (I lost my wallet or flights have been delayed or I've been mugged) and I need you to wire me money immediately in order for me to get home."

Step 5: Because the e-mail came from the traveler's real e-mail address, the friends are able to send replies and receive answers to convince them that this is a genuine e-mail. Some proceed to send money, which ends up going to the phisher.

In addition to hacking into e-mail accounts, these phishers are also breaking into social networking accounts and posing as the user. They then send e-mails, instant messages, or tweets to friends and family saying they're in trouble while traveling and urgently need money. To protect yourself from becoming a "traveler," be very skeptical of any e-mail that asks for your password or any link that asks you to log in to a social networking site again.

FCC's National Broadband Plan - A Disaster for the Rural U.S.

What would happen if the federal government decided that city roads, bridges, and infrastructure should be better-constructed and more efficient than the roads in rural America? What about if policymakers determined that urban residents should be able to get where they are going and get what they need faster than rural residents?

A new government plan intends to make that true of our nation's information superhighway - the Internet. And while it's not the highway we drive on, rural consumers should still be very concerned.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has crafted a plan to make broadband Internet access universally available. Reliable, high-speed broadband has become the essential service of today, like electricity and telephone service were decades ago. Broadband can improve the lives of all consumers, but access is especially important for those of us living in rural America. The Internet enables farmers to monitor weather patterns and ranchers to buy and sell livestock in markets far from home. It also gives small businesses the opportunity to reach customers nationwide, offers local students the chance to take classes online, and allows doctors to remotely diagnose patients and even offer remote emergency care.

The many benefits of broadband are clear, and we applaud the government's efforts to make affordable, reliable Internet connections a reality for all Americans. But the FCC's plan will make rural Americans second class citizens in the new broadband world, because it establishes a speed goal for rural areas that is twenty-five times slower than for urban areas. Please note that the FCC generally considers even the Omaha metro area as "rural".

Shouldn't rural communities have access to the same broadband services as our larger towns and cities?

Years ago, Congress established a universal service policy for telephone service. It required that those living in rural areas have access to communication services at prices that are affordable and reasonably comparable to those available in urban areas. Rather than support this same universal service philosophy for broadband, the FCC's plan offers faster, better service to some Americans while guaranteeing lesser services to others.

Don't let the FCC keep our rural community on the slow side of the broadband digital divide. Contact your congressional representatives and urge them to support regulatory action that ensures equal access to broadband for all Americans. If you'd like to learn more about this issue, contact Hartelco at 402-254-3901, or your local communications provider in your area.

Fiber Optics - What's the Benefits?

Why is FTTH Important to Me?
Fiber technology is unique because it can carry massive amounts of information, called bandwidth, over long distances without loss of quality. Copper wire can also carry high bandwidth, but only for a few hundred yards after which the quality degrades. Connecting homes directly to fiber optics instead of copper and coaxial cables enables homes and businesses to receive a wider range of products and services.

You can be sure the leap into the next-generation broadband will inspire further innovations that we cannot even imagine yet.

Advantages of Fiber To The Home
Greater Capacity:
As today's homeowners are using technologies that require more and more bandwidth, fiber optics are the only medium that can keep up with the bandwidth demand.

Cost-Effective: Data on a fiber optic cable can travel many miles in a split second. This speed allows a more cost-effective method to transmit large amounts of data to everyone's homes.

Secure: Voice and data transmissions via FTTH are more secure than when they are sent over conventional copper cable connections, and especially more secure than wireless cellphone conversations.

Future-Proofing: Once installed, fiber is usually upgraded by changing the electronics that creates the light pulses, and not by replacing the cable itself. That's why fiber networks are said to be "future-proof".

Questions and Answers
How much will installing fiber to my home cost?
We are waiving all construction costs. When we activate the new equipment, you will have higher quality telephone service.

Will installing fiber make my home more valuable?
Absolutely. A house is generally worth much more if it has access to a public street, water, and sewer services, public schools and other "utilities" than if it does not. A recent FTTH Council survey of home buyers and home developers estimated that fiber optics adds an average of more than $5,000 to the value of a home.

Will fiber optics increase my telephone rates?
No. Your telephone service price will not be affected because of fiber optic cable buried to your home or business.

Final Thoughts
We ask for your patience during this upgrading period and believe you will find the benefits of the fiber network will far outweigh any short term inconvenience you may experience. This is an investment in the future that we feel will bring value to our customers and the communities of Hartington and Bow Valley.

New Area Code - 10-Digit Dialing Starts in June

Eastern Nebraska will soon have a new "Area Code Overlay" assigned to our region of the state. How will this affect your calling?

Well the first thing you need to know is that your current phone number with the 402 area code will not change, and neither will anyone else's current phone number.

Only newly-assigned phone numbers might be assigned a number with the new 531 area code. It will depend on the amount of new phone numbers needed, but it's estimated that most, but not all, of the new numbers with the 531 area code will be assigned in the Omaha and Lincoln areas. But it is possible that a newly assigned number in our Hartington exchange might be assigned the new 531 area code.

Because of this, the new area code will require that everyone dialing a local phone number now must include your area code when dialing! This means that you will now be required to dial 10-digits instead of the normal 7-digits. This is a requirement throughout the current 402 area code region.

And what else might you need to know in advance? Do security systems need to be re-programmed for 10-digit dialing for local calls? What about speed dialing?

We've got it all covered. Just click here for more information.

And of course just give us a call at 402-254-3901 if you have more questions. We'll be glad to help you!

This Month's FAQ – What's The Difference Between Facebook Pages And Facebook Groups?

Question: What's the difference between Facebook Pages and Facebook Groups? At first glance, they seem similar to me.

Answer: While Facebook Pages and Facebook Groups do have some overlapping features, they were created to serve different purposes. Here are descriptions of each:

Facebook Banner Download Graphics to View Pages allow entities such as public figures, brands, and businesses to broadcast information to their fans. Pages can be thought of in much the same way as personal Facebook profiles, since Pages can also have friends, add pictures, and allow fans to post messages on walls. Not only can you connect with your favorite people and organizations through Pages, but you also can show your friends what you care about and recommend by adding Pages to your personal profile. When you become a fan of (now referred to as "Like") a Page, that information is posted on your wall for friends to see. Pages are indexed by external search engines such as Google, just like a public profile, while Groups are not.

Groups are meant to foster discussion around a particular topic or cause, and are designed for more personal interaction than are Pages. The key feature behind Groups is the ability to make them "invite only" or limited to specific networks. Administrators can set up Groups to be open to anyone, closed (where users must get administrator approval to join), or secret (invite only). For example, there could be a Group for alumni that is open only to a particular university network. Because of these privacy settings, Groups are similar to clubs in the offline world. Administrators can invite members to join via Facebook mail and e-mail, and open groups can be found via the Facebook search page.

Is there any advantage to having a facebook account and becoming a fan of Hartelco's Facebook Fan Page?

You bet! Facebook fans of Hartelco automatically receive Hartelco updates that we place on our fan page. We plan to use facebook for promotions, announcements, and contests. Becoming a fan ensures that you see these announcements right away so you don't miss any deadlines.
